Notes from D/s Dinner/salon #1

April 9, 2008 – 8:50 pm

Here are my notes from the first session. More questions than answers… I regret that I wasn’t so clever as to have included attributions. Which sucks because in both cases the knowledge in the room was humbling:

NOTES

Interval D/s
- scene based
- the difference between being a mermaid and taking a swim

How do the roles of power, privilage access, and the social construction of power in relation to our identities influence what we do?

Power + gender = sex toys

High context cultures
- highly defined frameworks of interaction ie. Japan, the Netherlands
- provides a sense of “place” within the societal structure

Low context cultures
- not a lot of definition or structure to social or familial interactions ie North America
- can result in a sense of wanting to belong

Language clash does not necessarily = a truth clash

Semniotic lag: one starts with a meaning for a word. When a new meaning comes along there can be trouble and interference w/understanding and development
- relates to use of language in the scene

All decisions of the dominant include the well being of the person in service
- is this true?
- is this an ideal state?
- how often does it happen?
- does this clash with the ideation of how a dominant is “supposed to be”

A master is committed to a person in a way that ensures the the person is better off…
- again, is the true? (see list above)

Consider the level of collar and level of commitment

BOOK: Female Sexual Slavery

Robert Rubel talks about Sorting by Self and Sorting by Others
- Historical: place oneself in history time/place
- Narrative consciousness: The person’s own story plays inside their head
